Aadhaar eSign API for NBFCs and Digital Lenders
Lending journeys stall at the signature step: the borrower has been approved, but the loan agreement is waiting on a courier or a branch visit. The SignYu API lets your loan origination system push the agreement PDF, collect an Aadhaar OTP eSign from the borrower and any co-applicant or guarantor, and get a webhook the moment the last signature lands. Pricing is from ₹15 per signature (₹15 per signature on packs of 10 or more), plus API access at ₹999/month with a 3-day free trial.
The problem with paper signing
- Disbursal waits on physical signatures, so approved borrowers drop off or go to a faster lender.
- Co-applicants and guarantors live in different cities, which makes wet-ink signing slow and costly.
- Ops teams chase signed copies over email and WhatsApp with no single status view per loan file.
- Auditors and partner banks ask for proof of who signed and when, and scanned copies do not answer that well.
- Per-envelope pricing from global eSign vendors does not fit small-ticket loans.
Documents you can sign with the API
Loan agreement
The core credit contract. Can be Aadhaar eSigned; stamp duty still applies as per the state's stamp law, usually paid through e-stamping before signing.
Sanction letter acceptance
Borrower accepts the sanctioned amount, rate and tenure. A natural first document to eSign right after credit approval.
Key Fact Statement acknowledgement
Borrower acknowledges the KFS before execution of the loan contract. Keep the KFS and the signed acknowledgement in the loan file.
KYC, CKYC and bureau consent
Consent to fetch credit bureau data or CKYC records. A short consent form signed with Aadhaar OTP gives a clear record of the borrower's consent.
Guarantee agreement
A contract of guarantee can be eSigned by the guarantor as a separate signer on the same document.
Loan closure NOC
Issued by the lender when a loan is fully repaid. Your authorised signatory can eSign it before it is shared with the borrower.
How the integration works
- 1
Generate the loan pack
Your LOS renders the loan agreement, sanction letter and KFS acknowledgement into one PDF once credit approves the file.
- 2
Create the document
POST /api/v1/documents with the PDF (up to 10MB) and a name like the loan account number. Save the returned documentId against the loan.
- 3
Add borrower, co-applicant and guarantor
POST /api/v1/documents/{id}/signers with each party's name, mobile and email, in the order they should sign. Up to 6 signers per document.
- 4
Send and embed the link
POST /api/v1/documents/{id}/send deducts one credit per signer, emails each signer, and returns a signUrl per signer that you can open from your app or send by SMS.
- 5
Track signatures
The signer.signed webhook updates the loan file as each party signs. Verify the X-SignSetu-Signature header before trusting it.
- 6
Release disbursal
On document.completed, call GET /api/v1/documents/{id} for the downloadUrl, store the signed PDF in your DMS, fetch the completion certificate, and move the loan to disbursal.
Legal validity
Aadhaar eSign through SignYu is issued via eMudhra and is valid under Section 3A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The First Schedule of the IT Act excludes some documents from electronic signing: negotiable instruments other than cheques (such as promissory notes and bills of exchange), powers of attorney, trusts, wills and other testamentary dispositions, and any contract for sale or conveyance of immovable property or any interest in such property. For lenders this means loan agreements, sanction letters, guarantees and consent forms can be eSigned, but demand promissory notes (DPNs), powers of attorney and mortgage documents that create an interest in immovable property cannot. Keep those on paper with the applicable stamp duty and registration. eSign does not replace stamp duty on the loan agreement, and RBI's digital lending directions on KFS, disclosures and data handling apply to you regardless of how the contract is signed.

Frequently asked questions
Can a demand promissory note be Aadhaar eSigned?
No. Negotiable instruments other than cheques are listed in the First Schedule of the IT Act, so a DPN cannot be executed with an electronic signature. Most digital lenders rely on the eSigned loan agreement and keep a wet-ink DPN only where their policy requires one.
How many parties can sign one loan agreement?
Up to 6 signers per document, for example a borrower, two co-applicants and a guarantor. Each signer completes their own Aadhaar OTP, and one credit is used per signer when you send.
Does the API store the borrower's Aadhaar number?
No. The Aadhaar OTP authentication happens on the eSign gateway run by eMudhra. SignYu never asks for or stores Aadhaar numbers, and your LOS should not send them either.
What evidence do we get for audits and partner banks?
The signed PDF carries each signer's Aadhaar eSign certificate. The certificate endpoint also returns a Signature Completion Certificate with a chronological audit trail of the document's events, which you can file next to the loan agreement.
Can we show the signing step inside our app?
Yes. The send call returns a signUrl for each signer. Open it in a browser tab or in-app browser from your loan journey; the borrower is taken to the Aadhaar OTP step and returned to SignYu's confirmation page after signing.
