You can buy e-stamp paper online and print it at home in 15 states and union territories through the official SHCIL e-stamping website, including Delhi, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. In other states you either start online and collect the certificate from an authorised centre, or pay through the state's own system, such as Maharashtra's GRAS. This guide shows where online purchase works, the exact steps, what it costs, and how to use the e-stamp with an online signature so the whole document is done without visiting a stamp vendor.

Where You Can Buy E-Stamp Paper Online

E-stamping in most of India runs through the Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL), which says it has implemented e-stamping in 26 states and union territories. Online payment with self-printing is a narrower list. According to SHCIL, you can pay online and print the e-stamp certificate yourself in:

RegionStates and union territories
NorthDelhi, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh
SouthKarnataka, Puducherry
North EastAssam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh
IslandsAndaman and Nicobar

This list depends on approval from each state, so it changes. Check the SHCIL e-stamping website (shcilestamp.com) for the current position before you start.

If your state is not on the list:

  • SHCIL states without self-printing: buy at an Authorised Collection Centre, usually a bank branch or a licensed agent. You fill a form, pay, and the certificate is printed and handed over on the spot.
  • States with their own systems: Maharashtra collects stamp duty online through GRAS on the Inspector General of Registration website, and issues receipts such as e-SBTR through authorised banks. Haryana uses its own e-GRAS portal. Other states run similar systems through their registration or revenue departments.

If you are unsure which applies, search your state's registration department website for "e-stamp" or ask the party who will receive the document.

How to Buy E-Stamp Paper Online on SHCIL

The process takes about 15 minutes if your state supports online purchase.

  1. Open the official site. Go to shcilestamp.com. Avoid look-alike websites that offer to "deliver" stamp paper at a markup unless you know they are authorised.
  2. Choose online e-stamp and your state. Register or log in, then select the state where the document will be executed. An e-stamp for one state is not valid for a document executed in another.
  3. Enter the document details. You will be asked for the type of document (the article under the state's stamp schedule, for example rent agreement or affidavit), the first party and second party names, the consideration amount if any, and who is paying the stamp duty.
  4. Enter the stamp duty amount. This is set by your state's schedule for that document. For rent agreements, see the stamp duty for your state's rent agreement.
  5. Pay online. Net banking, UPI or card, depending on the state.
  6. Download and print the certificate. Print it on plain A4 paper. The certificate carries a unique certificate number that anyone can verify.

Keep the payment receipt and a PDF copy of the certificate.

How Much Does E-Stamp Paper Cost?

The main cost is the stamp duty itself, which is the same as on physical stamp paper. It depends on the state and the document:

  • Many affidavits, declarations and undertakings need a small fixed amount, often between ₹10 and ₹100 depending on the state.
  • Rent agreements are usually charged a percentage of the rent and deposit, or a fixed amount for short terms. Our rent agreement stamp duty pages list the rate state by state.
  • Indemnity bonds, loan agreements and business agreements follow their own articles in the state schedule.

On top of the duty, collection centres may charge a small service fee. Buying online through SHCIL avoids vendor markups, which can be significant for low-value stamp paper in some cities.

Check That Your E-Stamp Is Genuine

Before anyone signs, verify the certificate. On the SHCIL website, open the option to verify an e-stamp certificate, select the state, and enter the certificate number and the other details the form asks for, such as the issue date and stamp duty type. The result should match the names, amount, date and purpose printed on your certificate.

For a fuller comparison, including whether stamp paper expires, see e-stamp paper vs physical stamp paper.

Sign the Document Online After Buying E-Stamp Paper

Buying the e-stamp online is only half the job. The parties still have to sign. You can finish that online too:

  1. Prepare your agreement or affidavit as a PDF.
  2. Add the e-stamp certificate as the first page of the PDF (scan or export it).
  3. Upload the PDF to an Aadhaar eSign service such as SignYu and add each signer's name, mobile number and email.
  4. Each person signs with an OTP sent to their Aadhaar-linked mobile, from wherever they are.
  5. Everyone receives the signed PDF. The signatures are embedded in the file and can be checked in any PDF reader.

This works for documents such as rent agreements, affidavits, indemnity bonds, employment agreements and loan agreements. Aadhaar eSign costs ₹15 per signature on SignYu, so a two-party rent agreement costs ₹30 in signatures on top of the stamp duty. For the full rent agreement workflow, see how to make a rent agreement online using eSign.

Documents you cannot eSign: Schedule I of the IT Act excludes powers of attorney, wills, trust deeds, negotiable instruments such as promissory notes and cheques, and contracts for the sale or conveyance of immovable property. These need a physical signature even if the stamp duty is paid by e-stamp.

Registration still applies where the law requires it. Some documents, such as rent agreements beyond a certain term in many states, must be registered at the sub-registrar's office. An e-stamp and an eSign do not replace registration.

Common Mistakes When Buying E-Stamp Paper Online

  • Wrong state. The e-stamp must be for the state where the document is executed.
  • Wrong document type or value. A genuine certificate of the wrong value still leaves the document under-stamped, which can mean penalties later.
  • Name mismatches. The party names on the certificate should match the names in the document.
  • Reusing one certificate. Each e-stamp certificate is for one document.
  • Unofficial websites. Some sites resell stamp paper at a markup or are not authorised. Use SHCIL, your state's portal, or a known authorised centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy e-stamp paper online in Maharashtra?

Maharashtra does not use SHCIL self-printing. Stamp duty is paid online through the state's GRAS system on the Inspector General of Registration website, or through authorised banks. Check the IGR Maharashtra website for the option that fits your document.

Is an e-stamp printed at home valid?

Yes, where the state allows online self-printing through SHCIL. The certificate's validity comes from the certificate number recorded centrally, not from special paper. Print it on plain A4 paper.

Can I buy e-stamp paper online for a rent agreement?

Yes, in states that support online purchase. Select the rent agreement article, enter the landlord and tenant names and the rent details, and pay the duty your state charges. Then attach the certificate to the agreement before signing.

Can I use one e-stamp for two documents?

No. Each certificate is issued for one document and one set of parties.

Does e-stamp paper expire?

The Stamp Act does not set a deadline for using stamp paper after purchase, but some offices prefer stamp paper bought close to the signing date. See our e-stamp vs physical stamp paper guide for details.

Buy the E-Stamp, Then Sign Online

For a fully online document in a supported state, buy the e-stamp on SHCIL, attach it to your PDF, and have every party sign with an Aadhaar OTP. Start with eSigning your rent agreement or your affidavit on SignYu for ₹15 per signature.
